Will New York City be the next Detroit?
I’m stealing this idea from Peter Schiff. The New York Stock Exchange was just bought by a German Company. I expect several other iconic financial companies to be bought by foreigners. Wall Streets reputation is in tatters. Will the financial services capital of the world move outside of the United States… leaving New York City in the state as Detroit City when it lost it’s relevance in the automobile industry?
Not necessarily – a tertiary service industry like finance does not operate the same way as a secondary or primary industry like the auto industry (secondary). Tertiary industry are reliant on having good people with specialized job skills concentrated in a given place, and these concentrations draw even more highly-skilled people and money – thus, on its own, the factors that make a given city like New York attractive to service industries tend to self-perpetuate. Hell, even during the 80’s when crime in New York was high and life was pretty dreary, the elite companies still wanted office space in Manhattan.
The same is not quite so true of primary and secondary industries – they are driven by cheaper costs more because steel from Country A is generally the same as steel from Country B (in other words, the inputs are generally of the same quality), and if it becomes cheaper in Country A, Country A will get more business, and it’s far easier to shift production than it is to shift social and corporate networks.
This is not to say that New York will be at the top forever – times do change things. But for something like finance, it will take a long time for that to happen, and the lone act of NYSE being bought by a German company is hardly enough to put that kind of change in.
